Objective: To synthetically explore the molecular targets of new drug for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Data sources: Computer-based online search of Springer between January 1990 and February 2005 and Pubmed between January 2000 and August 2005 were undertaken for English articles about prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus with the key words of 'diabetes, drug, target'. Objective: To synthetically explore the molecular targets of new drug for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Data sources: Computer-based online search of Springer between January 1990 and February 2005 and Pubmed between January 2000 and August 2005 were undertaken for English articles about prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus with the key words of 'diabetes, drug, target'. Study selection: The information concerning drug for preventing and treating type 2 diabetes mellitus was arranged to select those papers with strong pertinence and influence, published in recent years. Data extraction: Totally 49 papers were collected, 15 met the requirements and the rest 34 pieces were eliminated. Among the excluded papers, 6 pieces were concerning the foundation studies on pathogenesis and biochemistry of type 2 diabetes mellitus, the others were about the prevention and therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Data synthesis: The data suggested that the previous drug to treat diabetes mellitus had many disadvantages as lacking of definite molecular targets or unclear to the pathological reaction of the disease. The molecular targets of preventing and treating type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome provide prospect for studying and developing antidiabetic including micromolecule moderator of classic receptor, target of enzyme action, protein preparation and antisense oligonucleotides. Conclusion: To screen the drug regarding the physiological response mechanisms of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome as the molecular foundation is the tendency to study and develop antidiabetic.收起
