Aim: To explore the association of the left ventricular pattern and plasma catecholamine levels in primary hypertension. Methods: The experiment was conducted in Taian Central Hospital from February 2003 to July 2005. 102 patients with primary hypertension were selected and divided into four groups based on their Doppler echocardiography : 1 normal left ventricle group with normal left ventricular mass index and relative wall thickness ; 2 concentric remodeling group, with normal LVMI, but higher RWT; 3 concentric hypertrophy group with increase in both LVMI and RWT; 4 eccentric hypertrophy group with increased LVMI but normal RWT. Meanwhile, 50 healthy physical examinees were selected as normal control group persons. The patients with primary hypertension withdrew the hypotensive medicine for 2 weeks; and all subjects stopped smoking, wine, tea and coffee one day before examination. After fasting for 12 hours, they were drawn 10 mL blood in early morning to determine the concentration of catecholamine and norepinephrine with the high performance liquid chromatography method. Results: 152 subjected were involved in the result analysis. The epinephrine and norepinephrine levels of concentric remodeling group, concentric hypertrophy group and eccentric hypertrophy group were higher than those of the normal control group and normal remodeling group , while those of concentric remodeling group were higher than normal remodeling group, concentric hypertrophy group higher than concentric remodeling group, and eccentric hypertrophy group higher than concentric hypertrophy group . Conclusion: The increase in epinephrine and norepinephrine levels promotes the development of left ventricular pattern in patients with primary hypertension.收起
