Aim: To observe the effect of aqueous extract from Herba Eclipta on the survival time and oxygen consumption in hypoxic mice, and evaluate the hypoxia tolerance of Herba Eclipta. Methods: The experiment was finished in the Comprehensive Laboratory of Pharmacology, College of Pharmacy, Taishan Medical University from August to December 2004. Thirty-three mice were randomly divided into three groups and respectively administered with normal saline 30 mL/kg and different dosages of aqueous extract from Herba Eclipta at the dose of 15 g/kg and 30 g/kg. Changes of the survival time and oxygen consumption in mice were mesured. Results: All the 33 mice were involved in the result analysis. Compared with the group of the normal saline , aqueous extract from Herba Eclipta at the dose of 15 and 30 g/kg made the cumulative oxygen consumption respectively reduced by 19.05% and 66.67% in 0-5 minutes and 19.70% and 32.03% in 5-10 minutes. The survival rate of mice with hypoxia in 50 minutes were 34%, 45% and 100%, in 60 minutes 18%, 18% and 60 %, and in 70 minutes 0, 0 and 3% when receiving normal saline and aqueous extract from Herba Eclipta of 15 and 30 g/kg. Conclusion: The aqueous extract from Herba Eclipta can reduce the cumulative oxygen consumption in different time and enhance the hypoxia tolerance in mice, especially the large-dose extract.收起
