Objective: To summarize the mechanism and the functional changes of astrocyte activation, so as to provide a new method to improve neuron repair according to the activation of astrocyte in the functional changes. Objective: To summarize the mechanism and the functional changes of astrocyte activation, so as to provide a new method to improve neuron repair according to the activation of astrocyte in the functional changes. Data sources: Using the key terms astrocyte, function/acting, neuron rehabilitation/plerosis, we searched the MEDLINE, PUBMED, SPRINGER and PML databases plus relevant reference checks of all articles on biological functions of astrocytes and neuron repair in English language from January 1995 to April 2004. Meanwhile, for the above key terms in Chinese, we retrieved them in the Chinese journals full-text database plus relevant references on the mechanism and the functional changes of astrocyte activation in Chinese language from January 1995 to April 2004. Study selection: All articles were selected firstly. Inclusive criteria: All articles published after 1995 were relevant to biological function of astrocyte, activation, development of neuron, nutrition, plerosis and lesion. Exclusive criteria: The summarizations and the duplicated articles were excluded. Data extraction: Among 201 selected articles, 17 articles were included because they could contain the others and were published between 1996 and 2004. Data synthesis: All selected articles and relevant information were summarized, including 13 articles on biological function of astrocyte, 13 articles on activation, and 17 articles on biological functions of astrocytes and neuron repair. Conclusion: The biological functions of astrocytes is complicated and can affect neuron rehabilitation by many pathways. Its effects on neurons are two-edged. We can accelerate neuronal rehabilitation by adopting the functional changes of astrocytes after activation and avoiding its shortcomings.收起
