The self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with gradient positive charges and surface free energy were fabricated by surface grafting of a binary mixture of organosilanes with different terminal chemical group including amino and methyl on glass slides. Surface free energy was measured by the van Oss\' modification of Young\'s equation. With the percentage of methyl on the SAMs increasing from 0 to 0.6, the adhesion amount of diatom cells reduced owing to the decrease of surface free energy and positive charges. With the percentage of methyl on the SAMs increasing from 0.6 to 1, the adhesion amount of diatom cells increased because the surface free energy increased although the positive charges decreased. The results also revealed that hydrophilic surface probably inhibit the adhesion of diatom cells. The adhesion amount of diatom cells indicated significant difference on surfaces with different charges and surface free energy, providing a potential clue on prevention and treatment of marine fouling organisms.收起
