Background: Previous studies have demonstrated a strong correlation between the atherogenic index of plasma and both diabetes and depression. However, the relationship between AIP and the risk of depression in individuals with diabetes remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between AIP and the risk of depression in patients with diabetes. Methods: The data were derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a nationally representative cross-sectional database, from 2011 to 2018. Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Weighted multivariate logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline regression were employed to evaluate the association between AIP and depression in patients with diabetes. Results: A total of 1773 participants with diabetes were included in the study, of whom 215 suffered from depression. The AIP was 0.41 ± 0.33. A multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a significant positive association between AIP and the risk of depression in patients with diabetes mellitus . Furthermore, a significant association was observed between sex and diabetes status; men with diabetes exhibited higher levels of AIP and an elevated risk of depression compared with women . Conclusions: Elevated AIP was significantly associated with an increased risk of depression in patients with diabetes, particularly among men. The integration of AIP measurement into routine metabolic monitoring has the potential to facilitate the early identification of individuals at high risk of depression.收起
